Safe Tow Car and Caravan Limits
Is your tow car safe to tow your caravan?, to answer this question, first you need to know the kerbweight (A) and the maximum towing limit (B) of your car,and then the MTPLM (MTPLM=Maximum Technical Permissible Laden Mass, Prior to 1988 it was known as MGW, Maximum Gross Weight) as in the maximum the caravan can weight with all your items in it (C).
Car details/weights can be found in the handbook or workshop manual, otherwise contact the manufacturer.
Caravan weights can usually be found on the chassis plate or caravan handbook, if not contact the manufacturer.
It is highly recommended that you use the 85% rule when calculating a car and caravan match, the 85% rule means that the caravan that you are towing should not weigh more than 85% of the car's kerbweight.
To calculate this figure divide the car's kerbweight by 100 and then multiply it by 85. So, if your car has a kerbweight of 1600kgs, dividing it by 100 and then multiplying it by 85 gives a figure of 1360kgs which is the maximum recommended caravan weight.
Is your Car and Caravan combination legal or recommended?
(A) Car Kerbweight
(B) Max Tow Limit of the Car
(C) MTPLM of Caravan
Your car and caravan are a legal match if (C) is equal or less than (B)
Your car and caravan are a recommended match if (C) is equal or less than (A)
If you have many years experience towing a caravan a value of between 85% and 100% is acceptable, however it's still recommended the 85% rule is adhered to as this will lead to a more stable and safe towing combination
